Goosebumps?? Really??

I always grew up thinking reading wasn’t a big deal. I was never the type to read growing up. This all changed when I grabbed my first Goosebumps book. The author is R.L Stine. At this time I was already aware of the t.v series they had with the books. I remember going to the library and always checking to see if they had any new Goosebumps books first. I enjoyed reading them because I had already seen some t.v episodes and wanted to see how the books were compared to the show. At this time I was around 2nd or 3rd grade. I loved the fact how the ending of every book and show, it left you with a big cliff hanger. I also liked the fact that every single book was a completely new story, although they did have a few part two and part threes. I guess a big part that made me interested in Goosebumps was because I had also liked horror topics. I used to always go for the horror books and always wanted to see the horror movies and things of that nature. Once I had read a couple of my first Goosebumps series, I was hooked. I really don’t know what it was. Maybe it was the cheesy horror, but I think it was just cause you are young, and young kids get amused easily. After reading my share of Goosebumps books, I started reading other series like Jigsaw Jones and The Magic Tree House. I actually started to enjoy reading at that age. It was when I was in middle school where it seemed that I lost interest in reading. I remember trying to read books by Stephen King when I was near 9th grade. I think since I tried to read such an advance book, I didn’t understand much so therefore I kind of just gave up on the whole thing. It seems like a shame now to me, how I really did go from enjoying reading to not ever wanting to read on my own time. I was always told by my dad that reading is the key to knowledge. You can learn more than you think if you just read a book here and there. He always said that if I read more, I could get better grades. I didn’t really listen because I didn’t know how that works out. I had decent grades in high school, I just stop and think sometimes what I could have accomplished if I really tried and put more effort in my readings and school work. Maybe I could have been that special one somebody that people would remember.

  2. I feel that your desire for horror movies and novels could have sprouted from these goosebumps books in the first place. These books were written to entertain those of developmental ages and since you enjoyed this book at such a young age, it may have formed a connection between enjoyment and horror novels. I myself also enjoyed goosebumps books but I never really enjoyed horror movies or novels otherwise. This is because i was already attracted to comedies such as Sunday morning cartoons and such. The fact that I was able to pick my own ending in some of the old goosebumps books made me interested in those books as well and I can relate to your enjoyable experience.

  3. I used to really be into Stephen King books too as well as Goosebumps. They really are entertaining as far as children's horror goes and my horror interest routes are from Goosebumps. Do you read any Anne Rice books?

  4. The Goosebumps section was always the first spot I would hit at my local library, also. I have several friends who would echo that story, leading me to (perhaps erroneously) believe that anyone born in the late 1980s in this country took some inspiration from those scary stories. Even more on the creative side was the series that let you choose at random one of several endings in the same book. Did you ever read those?

The TV show wasn't as exciting as the books, I feel, because I liked to imagine my own settings. The TV show took away the potential for the audience's creativity.

  5. I remember the Goosebumps series! They were always the books I would check out from the Library when I wasn’t checking out those Star Wars books. Though, being that young, I would usually get scared of the TV show, so the books were always where I went. They were always so interesting! The one that sticks out in my mind the most is the black knight and one where they were stuck in a castle with torture devices. It also usually had those kind of “it’ll be back” endings. Ah… The good ol’ days of Goosebumps…

  6. Reading was never the most important thing to me. I always read the goosebumps I had the whole serious from my older brother. A series of books also made me start to read as well
